Matthew 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
This is a verse that most Christians know and claim. They want to claim the promise that God will provide all their needs but they do not want to do their part. This is a conditional promise from the Lord, meaning that in order for Him to provide for all of you needs, you first have to seek God and His righteousness.
What does it mean to seek God? How does one go about seeking God? Most people today are not concerned with seeking God. If they were, there would be more people on the mission field, more people sharing the faith, and churches would be popping up everywhere instead of closing their doors. Seeking God is a must in the life of a believer. Seeking God is earnestly looking or trying to find God. It is searching for God with the purpose of finding Him not just stumbling upon Him. Seeking God is finding out who God really is and what are His desires for your life.
One can seek God in a few different ways. The first and probably the best way to seek God is in the Word of God. Reading the Word of God daily and studying the Word of God will help you to know who God is, what God likes, what are His desires, and even what God has commanded His children to do. Prayer is the means that God has established for us to communicate with Him. If you are going to seek God you must communicate with Him. Listening to good preaching helps you to know God. Allowing the Holy Spirit to work in your life through a man of God will help to learn of God and His attributes. Fellowship with other believers will aid in keeping you on the right track. As you seek God, you will find the calling of God for your life and it will give your life purpose.
Christians are not just to seek God but also His righteousness. It is sad how many believers try to live life in their own “righteousness”. They may be saved but they are living each day in their own strength. Many people will say that it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. That is not living in God’s righteousness. There should be evidences of the righteousness of God in the live of the believer. God is holy, just, honest, faithful, and loving. All of these and many more are speaking of the righteousness of God, therefore they should be present in the life of a Christian.
Have you ever claimed this passage for yourself or are you claiming it now? You cannot expect God to provide any of your needs unless you are fulfilling the first part of the verse. You have to be actively seeking God and you have to be actively seeking His righteousness. God wants to provide and will provide as long as we are meeting the conditions that He has set up for us.
